Cult of the Phoenix

By Brendan Jon Philip

The work of Brendan Philip draws on mythological systems and esoteric conjectures woven through oblique art historical and literary references as the impetus for emergent processes of image making. Approaching the language of abstraction as an interpretive framework in itself, the work is concerned with the binary tensions expressed most fundamentally in light emerging from darkness as the essential, archetypal action of creation.

This new collection builds upon recurrent motifs and allusions, in particular addressing the legendary phoenix, that in its rebirth from ashes suggests appropriate metaphor for the generative and regenerative process of a painterly practice.
